Thomas Karsten was adviser to the municipality of Malang from 1929 to 1935. He created a new design and turned Malang of “old times” into a beautiful city of parks. Han Awal, one of Indonesia’s senior architects, reminisced about his childhood in Malang.

JALAN Ijen, Malang in the 1940s. Every evening before sunset, children would play on roller skates along this boulevard. The road is very wide, and children enjoyed playing roller skates, which was very popular at the time. The boulevard, where houses of the elite are located, has a very long park in the middle.
