He has reached the advanced age of 97. An exhibition currently at the Erasmus Huis reminds us of his vastly influential role on Bali's modern art.

Arie Smit will be 100 in just three years. The artist, born in Zaandam, Netherlands, who is known for inspiring the establishment of the Young Artists movement in Bali, now lies in weak condition on his bed in Vila Sanggingan, Ubud. All of his personal needs are fulfilled on that bed. Every once in a while he is carried outside of the room to enjoy some fresh air.
