A Maritime Giant and Investor-Friendly Indonesia

Tuesday, November 18, 2014

President Joko Widodo made his first internation speech during the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO Summit in Beijing, China, on Monday last week. He spoke slowly, using simple English and a thick Javanese accent. The video of his speech on YouTube is arguably the most-watched video that has ever been uploaded by APEC. While he was not the most eloquent English speaker, Joko's message was clear: he wants more investors to put their money in Indonesia.

He focused on four different sectors: ports and the nautical highway system, trains, mass transportation and electricity. During his 13-minute speech, Joko mentioned that Indonesia's push to build more infrastructure could offer business opportunities. There are plans to build 24 ports in the next five years. We want to build ports in Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Papua. This is your opportunity, he said.
