MYANMAR's new president Htin Kyaw has signed an order to pardon 83 political prisoners on Saturday, April 16, which coincided with the country's traditional New Year's Day. "In order to give satisfaction to the majority of the people, we will continue to release political prisoners, political activists and students facing trials related to politics," he said.
Htin Kyaw, who took power at the end of March as the first freely elected president, has vowed to prioritize the release of people jailed by the country's former military leaders. The military's routine jailing of dissidents was one of many repressive policies that garnered support for Aung San Suu Kyi's party, the National League for Democracy (NLD).
