The solution to traffic jams is to restrict the use of cars

ENRIQUE Penalosa, Mayor of Bogota from 1998 to 2001, did not feel comfortable sitting around for hours at a time. In Jakarta to attend the Symposium on the Sustainable Jakarta Convention 2009 at the Jakarta Convention Center last week, he indicated an interest to ride around Jakarta on the busway or TransJakarta bus system, a public transportation project that emulated the TransMilenio project in his own country of Colombia, when he was interviewed by Tempo reporter Ahmad Taufik and photographer Novi Kartika at the Four Seasons Hotel.

As soon as he stepped out of the five-star hotel in Kuningan, Penalosa launched his first of many criticisms. “With buildings that high (pointing at the hotel and apartments nearby), the pavements should have been wider, not like this,” he said

Suddenly, a bicyclist had to stop by the curb because he was not given any space by a car passing us. “See, there is no space for bicycles in this place,” said Penalosa.
