It’s a Gas, Gas, Gas

DIDIN is the brother of Iyah, my live-in pembantu (helper), who runs a tiny sewing business in the nearby kampung. The daily menu of Didin’s family of four has changed a lot over the past few months—and not for the better, he says.

Now they mainly cook simple ‘fast food’: sautéed vegetables or clear vegetable soups, with
