Since Lt. Gen. Agus Wirahadikusumah was relieved as Com-mander of Kostrad, Army Strategic Command, early last year, President Wahid has tried hard to tether TNI to maintain his position. This skilful maneuvering enabled him to emerge unscathed from the annual MPR session after pledging to share his presidential power with Vice President Megawati Sukarnoputri.

The compromise was short lived and lasted but a few weeks.
