According to data of the Military Survey and Mapping Center of the Indonesian Military (TNI), the total number of islands in Indonesia is 17,508, and only 5,707 islands have names. This number has been corrected by the National Aviation and Outer Space Institution (Lapan). According to satellite observation in 2002, the number of islands in Indonesia reaches 18,306.
