The dispute between Indonesia and Malaysia for territorial sovereignty over Sebatik Island has still not been resolved. Could Sebatik be a time bomb in Indonesia-Malaysia relations, waiting to explode?

Spanning just 40,000 hectares, Sebatik Island commands far more attention than other islands of its size. In fact, Sebatik is the most remote island to be visited by President Yudhoyono. Sebatiks importance stems from its location. Located off East Kalimantan, the island has become the object of a territorial dispute between Indonesia and Malaysia. At 4o 10 longitude, Sebatik is located right on the borderline separating Indonesia and Malaysia.
