Arms Trade in the Heart of Poso

Hundreds of locally made weapons and thousands of rounds of ammunition are thought to be circulating in Poso, where a conflict has been going on for nine years. They are smuggled in by various routes from the South Philippines and Java. These weapons may have also been obtained through wayward members of the TNI. Tempo reports from Poso, Central Sulawesi.

A MAJOR raid was conducted on the Trans-Sulawesi, a main thoroughfare passing through the City of Poso. Police stopped each truck, private car and motorcycle that passed, then checked them one by one. Over 100 armed police officers took place in this sweep on Wednesday night last week.

The team consisted of members of the 88th Special Antiterror Detachment and National Police Headquarters. They combed through residential areas in Bonesompe and Law
