A check for Rp40 billion of Bulog funds was received in person by Akbar Tandjung. His claim that he passed it on to an unnamed `foundation' is widely suspected of being an invention to try to cover up a massive scandal.

Akbar Tandjung's powers of memory have not recovered. On Thursday two weeks ago, the Golkar chairman suddenly was hit by a `forgetting illness'. It was especially acute when he had to clarify which foundation it could be that received Rp40 billion in Bulog money which passed through his hands in early 1999.

"I do not remember, but I will check again in the files," said the 56-year-old Golkar chief and House of Representatives (DPR) speaker.
