HE was asleep, with a book next to his head. The title was illegible but Arabic script could be seen on its pages. In a cell at Block B-3 of Jakarta’s Police Detention Center, which accommodated five people, lay Al-Amin Nasution, a United Development Party (PPP) politician, fast asleep. “He was tired after Friday prayers and went straight to sleep,” said one of the police guards.

Last Friday was the 10th day of Al-Amin’s stay in the cell
