THE Sidogiri Pesantren in Pasuruan, is an example of a classical Islamic education setting which has broken with the culture of the past. The idea of a boarding school as a place only for studies has changed at the Sidogiri school. Business is taught alongside Arabic grammar. KH Fuad Noerhasan, 53, caretaker of the Sidogiri school, told Tempo’s Muhammad Taufik how the business developed into a large cooperative. Excerpts:
