DURING the holidays, Ilham always brings unusual souvenirs back home with him: mahogany and cocoa seedlings. “It’s to make the dry land of my village fertile,” said the 16-year-old santri from Tumpak Kuta village, Central Lombok, in West Nusa Tenggara. In the two years he studied at Al-Maarif Madrasah in Pembuwun Keling, Sesaot, West Lombok, he was not only taught religion, but also about the environment.
