Denomination Debate

BANK Indonesia's plan to carry out a redenomination of the rupiah has provoked heated debate. Many are concerned that the plan will not be understood by the ordinary people and create panic. Indonesia has a history of attempting sanering or cutting the value of the currency that was unsuccessful in rescuing the economy. But Bank Indonesia is convinced that with a redenomination, the rupiah will appear strong, valuable and credible.
