THE large mansion has lost its color and glory, the white paint peeling off here and there, crisscrossed by long cracks across the wall. The narrow front door is tightly shut. The wood-framed windows adorned with brown curtains look dull. The lackluster appearance is further intensified by the presence of sidewalk vendors at the western corner of the house, selling gasoline, stamp seals, or motorbike spare-parts along with repairs.
