THE April 1914 the Sarekat Islam congress in Jogjakarta foretold the end of Samanhoedi’s leadership. His reputation as the founder of the organization which evolved out of a village self-defense association, the Rekso Roemekso, diminished not long after. His batik business also began to decline. His authority as the leader of the organization was taken over by one of his own recruits to head the Surabaya branch: Oemar Said Tjokroaminoto.
