A caning officer from Aceh Tamiang regency shared his experience with Tempo. We met him in Kota Langsa, about one and a half hours from Kuala Simpang in Aceh Tamiang, so he could tell his story. The 38-year-old caning officer had only one request: to remain anonymous. Here is his story.

My hand started to ache on the third hit of the cane. On the fourth strike, my right hand began to weaken. The stroke was not as hard as the first. People watching the caning immediately reacted and started booing. That shocked me. On the fifth stroke of the cane I swung my right hand harder. The audience immediately applauded, right up until the final hit on the man in front of me.
