Battle at the Exit Polls

Tuesday, July 15, 2014

HUSIN Yazid seemed upset during a meeting at a cafe in South Jakarta, last week. His irritation had to do with the exit polls held after the election held on July 9. Husin is executive director of the Center for Policy and Strategic Development Studies (Puskaptis). His institution was called a fraud and thrown into the public spotlight after announcing the results of an exit poll that had Prabowo Subianto and Hatta Rajasa leading. "If I farted, that might have made the news," he told Tempo.

The Puskaptis poll resulted in 52.05 percent for Prabowo and 47.95 percent for Joko Widodo. Husin emphasized that this poll followed the proper procedure, and he could take accountability for it in academic terms. He cited Puskaptis's success in conducting political surveys since its founding in 2006.
