The nine men worked day and night for most of June 1945. Appointed during the first session of the Indonesian Independence Preparatory Work Investigative Board (BPUPKI), the men had been given a heavy assignment: to draw up Pancasila as the ideological premise of the nation and based on this treatise, to pen the text of the national proclamation of independence. Muhammad Yamin was one of the men on this team.

The seven other members of this team led by Sukarno were: Mohammad Hatta, A.A. Maramis, Abikusno Tjokrosujoso, Abdul Kahar Muzakkir, Achmad Subardjo, H Agus Salim, and Wahid Hasyim. There are no records on the work done by this team, and no minutes or stenographic records of their meetings.
