Battle for Benoa Bay

Tuesday, December 16, 2014

A LETTER reaching Sleman, Yogyakarta, in early November made the heart of Muhammad Sigit Nurcahyo alias Digie Sigit pound hard. The letter was sent from Lans, Austria, by artist Hans-Dieter Manhartsberger. On the upper right corner of the envelope were four stamps with illustrations of a Balinese woman dancer's face. "It's my mural painting, Bali Tolak Reklamasi (Bali Against Reclamation)," he said, beaming with pleasure.

Sigit is one of Yogyakarta's street artists. The 37-year-old is actively supporting the movement of Forum Rakyat Bali Tolak Reklamasi (ForBali), Balinese people's forum against the reclamation of Benoa Bay in Bali, through his works. Sigit's mural is widely found in public spaces of the city. Using the stencil technique, he reproduces his work on objects.
