TEN years after the tsunami in Aceh, wide roads built with American aid cut across fertile green rice fields. The neighborhoods around Chinatown are once again busy, having been rebuilt with funds raised by actor Jackie Chan. Majestic mosques have been restored, thanks to donations from the Sultanate of Oman and other Middle Eastern countries. These are just a few examples of the massive reconstruction effort that went on for the past 10 years.
Post-tsunami Aceh consists, first and foremost, of new and upgraded infrastructure. Sadly, it is also the story of a people brutally traumatized by the effects of the giant tidal wave.
