AFTER its nearly 50-year exploitation, the Mahakam River delta is still the most productive gas field in Indonesia. About 1.6 billion cubic feet of gas a day are pumped from wells there, accounting for nearly a fourth of national production. The block's management contract for Total E&P Indonesie and Inpex companies ends at the end of 2017. When that happens, the government plans to turn it over to state-owned oil and gas company Pertamina.
