BATAM Island caught the attention of South African Ambassador Pakamisa Augustine Sifuba. Batam is similar to the free trade zone in his country, the Coega Industrial Development Zone. To learn about its regulating policies, Sifuba met with Mayor Ahmad Dahlan and Batam Exploitation Deputy Chief, Jon Arizal at the end of March.
South Africa's interest in Batam focused especially in the areas of trade development, tourism and infrastructure. "The similarity between the two regions in Batam and South Africa lies in its role as a logistics center," said Sifuba, whom Tempo met two weeks ago.
