THE motorboat helmed by Maga Lotung suddenly stopped 50 meters before Kamal Muara port in Penjaringan, North Jakarta. Smoke was wafting from its Mitsubishi Colt Diesel P 100 engine. "Some sand got into the exhaust and engine," said Maga, last week.
This 34-year-old man who lives in that fishing area got out of the boat and pushed it up to the pier. On that day, three months ago, Maga had just taken tourists to Onrust Island in the Thousand Islands chain. After that, he stopped going to sea because his boat's engine kept stalling and repairs cost Rp3 million. "For three months I worked helping out a friend," he said.
