An important guest dropped by the RAND Corporation office in Santa Monica, California, in 1962. RAND Corporation is a non-profit research institution set up by Douglas Aircraft Company in 1946 and was then managed by Air Force General Henry H. 'Hap' Arnold.
The guest was Colonel Suwarto, deputy commander of the Army Staff and Command College (Seskoad) in Bandung. The Fort Leavenworth military training graduate was responding to an invitation from Guy Jean Pauker, a Southeast Asia expert at RAND, an adviser to the US National Security Council (NSC) and a Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) consultant.
