Dozens of ships were docking at Brenta Coast in Pamekasan, East Java, two weeks ago. It was relatively quiet. Most fishermen from this coastal village south of Madura Island were all fishing. "The weather is good and the catch is abundant," said Sultan Takdir, Head of Brenta Pesisir Fishermen's Association that afternoon.

At least 1,750 fishermen families live there. Compared to other basic commodities, diesel is of the utmost important. Without it, they cannot go to sea. And that is tantamount to not having food to eat. That was the reason the villagers cheered when Pertamina announced a diesel price reduction of Rp200 per liter early October.
