Foreign Influx, Local Market Distortion

Tuesday, November 10, 2015

Ever since the imported rice started flooding the market, Muhammad Saragih has not been sleeping well. His rice no longer sells as well as it used to due to price competition. "Every month I've selling two tons at most," said the rice trader at Angso Duo Market in Jambi last week.

Muhammad sells rice between Rp11,000 and Rp13,000 per kilogram. He buys the rice from Jambi, West Sumatra, Lampung and South Sumatra on average at Rp10,000 per kilogram. The imported rice, however, sells at Rp9,500 at Jambi's oldest market.
