The extension of Freeport's contract of work has been equated with scheming and intrigue. Long before the current scandal implicated House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Setya Novanto and oil importer Muhammad Riza Chalid, a similar scheme took place two decades ago. The scheme then was almost the same: a demand for a share of the company's stocks.
"The extension of the contract cannot be separated from the intrigues that went on during the New Order," said Fahmi Radhy, an economist at the Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta and a former member of the Anti-Oil and Gas Mafia Team, last week.
