Much Ado about Saving Setya

SETYA Novanto sat down on the sofa in his House of Representatives (DPR) office in Senayan, Jakarta, on Wednesday last week. Still the speaker of the House at the time, Setya and his legal advisor Firman Wijaya, along with other Golkar politicians, watched the live broadcast of the House's ethics council proceedings.

The speaker, Firman said, was stunned when he learned that the majority of the ethics council members wanted to give him the moderate punishment, one of three possible punishments to mete out. Until then, the speaker thought he would win the vote. At that moment, Firman said, he suggested that Setya resign from the speakership before the council could finalize its verdict.
