A closed-door meeting proceeded smoothly at the second floor of the office of the Indonesian Council of Ulama (MUI) last week. For two hours, representatives of selected mass organizations took turns stating their views on a matter that appeared to be of great urgency. They reached a conclusion: Signs of a resurgence of the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) were becoming increasingly clear. "We represent networks that are aware of the PKI resurgence," said Alfian Tanjung, chairman of the Strategic Studies Department of the National Defense Movement (GBN), after the meeting.
Also attending that meeting were, among others, chairman of the central executive board of the Islam Defenders Front (FPI), Shobri Lubis, GBN chairman Maj. Gen. (ret.) Budi Sujana and representatives of the Indonesian Islamic Youth Movement (GPII) and the Indonesian Muslim Students Union (PII). There was also defense ministry expert staff member Ian Santoso, who noted that signs of a PKI resurgence were very evident. According to Alfian, all of the participants at the meeting agreed to monitor and oppose all activities of PKI supporters. "They will not even be able to smile," said Alfian.
