Two visitors arrived at the in-patient care section on the fifth floor of Mayapada Hospital at Lebak Bulus, South Jakarta, last week. A former minister of education and culture, Anies Baswedan, was a patient there since the previous day, recovering from a virus infection. Visiting officials, from the ministry Anies left last August, had just left the room.

These were no ordinary visitors. Anies' mother, who was standing by her son at the hospital, excused herself when they arrived. The first guest was United Development Party (PPP) chairman Muhammad Romahurmuziy, accompanied by businessman Aksa Mahmud, brother-in-law to Vice President Jusuf Kalla. They came at about 8:30pm and left just before midnight.
