The High in the Low-Cost Auto Market

Tuesday, October 25, 2016

Amelia Tjandra seems ecstatic whenever the Sigra is mentioned. For the marketing director of Astra Daihatsu Motor company, the Sigra has been a lifeline amid sluggish automobile sales over the past three years. Sales figures for the model have been incredible. Since its launch on August 2 to the end of September, 13,469 units of this seven-passenger, low cost green car (LCGC) minibus have been sold. If this figure is divided by the dealer's total hours of operation, a Sigra is being sold every minute.

"Sigra sells well because consumers have waited for a long time," she told Tempo at the Astra Daihatsu Internasional dealership in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta, last month. Astra Daihatsu has now set an ambitious sales target of 3,000 Sigra units per month.
