Agus Harimurti-Sylviana Murni: Under Pepo's Watchful Eye

Tuesday, February 14, 2017

On Thursday last week, Muhammad Rifky spoke to hundreds of Barisan Betawi members at Wisma Proklamasi, Central Jakarta. They were briefed to be witnesses at voting booths (TPS) designated for the Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono-Sylviana Murni ticket, in the final countdown of Jakarta's gubernatorial election this week. "If anyone cheats, just deal with them," said Eki Pitung, Muhammad Rifky's nickname.

He called these electoral witnesses centeng, a word meaning 'guard' in Betawi or traditional Jakarta dialect, which carries a pejorative meaning. They represent 97 public membership-based organizations which voluntarily belong to the Barisan Betawi, such as the Forum Betawi Rempug (FBR), Forum Komunikasi Anak Betawi (Forkabi), Macan Kemayoran and Brigade Anak Jakarta (Braja). Their training included watching video simulations of voting scenarios.
