After retiring from the military, Gatot Nurmantyo now wishes to run in the 2019 presidential election. He's receiving support from a volunteer group and is in communication with several political parties. According to a politician from the Gerindra Party, Gatot has applied to run as Gerindra's presidential candidate.

Although he does not yet have a campaign team, Gatot does have a team of people managing his social media presence. He's adopted a more relaxed style than when he was still commander of the Indonesian Military (TNI).
