After retiring from the military, Gatot Nurmantyo now wishes to run in the 2019 presidential election. He's receiving support from a volunteer group and is in communication with several political parties. According to a politician from the Gerindra Party, Gatot has applied to run as Gerindra's presidential candidate.

Although he does not yet have a campaign team, Gatot does have a team of people managing his social media presence. He's adopted a more relaxed style than when he was still commander of the Indonesian Military (TNI). When he visited Tempo's headquarters last Tuesday, he spoke freely on various topics, laughed often and deftly dodged tricky questions.
