Dr. Sulianti Saroso: The Woman Who Eradicated Smallpox

An infectious diseases hospital is named after Sulianti Suroso, a doctor who played a major role in the eradication of smallpox in the country. She once helped smuggle a plane during the struggle for independence.

THE day when she passed away on April 29, 1991, doctor Sulianti Saroso had already obtained the ticket for a flight abroad in the following month. She fell in bathroom that evening, after previously complaining of dizziness. Up until her death at almost 74 years of age, she was still working as consultant for an agency in the United Nations, a profession that brought her traveling around the world

Her last moments were a reflection of her life.
