Deforestation and illegal nickel mining continues in Halmahera. It became widespread after Minister Bahlil revoked some mining licenses.

THE forest area in Lelilef village, Weda subdistrict, Central Halmahera, North Maluku, appeared barren at the end of November 2023. The trunks of felled trees were scattered in various directions. Environmental damage occurred after the Minister of Investment/Head of the Investment Coordinating Board, Bahlil Lahadalia, revoked the nickel mining permit of Tekindo Energi in that area in April 2022.
