THE diary is written in longhand on faded paper. Although the writing is neat, the pages of the thin book are stained with perspiration. In one place, the writer complains: “...they hit me in the face until my lower lip was busted. Then, they pumped air into my right and left ears, strong enough to blow up a balloon. After that, they said, “Sorry, Ustad (Teacher), we’re doing this because it’s our duty.”
