Bakrie’s Fast-Track Cellular Licensing

The long wait for Bakrie Telecom is over. Two weeks ago Communication and Information Minister Tifatul Sembiring signed a license in principle granting the right for the subsidiary of the Bakrie Group to be a GSM operator. Many charged the decision ran counter to regulations Sembiring himself issued and signed.

THE obsession of Bakrie Telecom (BTEL) to expand into cellular business is expected to become a reality soon. Two weeks ago Communication and Information Minister Tifatul Sembiring signed a permit in principle granting the right to BTEL to operate a mobile cellular network. Sembiring signed the permit based on approval taken earlier on March 21 at a plenary meeting of the telecommunications regulatory agency (BRTI).
