Alms Management at a Crossroads

The government favors Baznas as regulator-cum-operator for the collection and distribution of alms. Privately-run alms agencies oppose the move.

AROUND 50 people representing privately-run agencies and state-owned enterprises (SOEs) in the business of managing alms gathered at Hotel Sofyan in Tebet, Jakarta, on March 11. These members of the Alms Forum had come together to formulate a protest. Only one lone member was not invited: the National Alms Management Agency (Baznas), the object of the other members' ire.

The objection arose from the introduction of Government Regulation No. 14/20
