The meeting of amil zakats, or alms collectors, on the third day of Ramadan fasting month was heated. Twenty people attended the meeting at the Lampung Peduli Social Care Institute, Bandar Lampung. The attendees discussed permits for the province's private tithes institutions.
Three participants from the Lampung chapter of the National Tithe Council (Baznas) accused 15 private alms institutions in the region of not having authorization and forbade them from collecting funds. Protests from government tithes collectors were triggered by a Lampung Alms Forum (FOZ) advertisement a few days earlier. The ad in the local paper was an invitation to people to pay alms through official institutions. What they meant by 'official institutions' were the 15 FOZ member institutions, a tithes umbrella institution established in Jakarta 18 years ago.
