A businessman is seeking a debt reduction based on a draft presidential decree. To avoid such future lunacy, the government should once and for all clarify whether or not there is indeed a debt reduction policy.

The news of a 50 percent debt reduction for cooperatives and SMEs (small- and medium-sized enterprises) has spread far and wide, despite the fact that the policy has not yet been enacted into law. The reason being that President Megawati has not signed the draft presidential decree, which, among other things, stipulates that debts amounting to less than Rp5 billion should be given a trim.
