One Batam, Two Wishes

Four islands in Batam are to become free trade zones. However, the government is concerned this could lead to an increase in smuggling activities in the area.

A PLENARY session at the House of Representatives (DPR) on Wednesday evening last week ended in deadlock. Even though all the factions in the DPR had already agreed to pass into law the draft bill regarding free trade zones and free harbors, known as the Batam free trade zone (FTZ) state decree, the government in fact, held the opposite opinion. Efforts to reach agreement lasted a total of three and a half hours, but in the end failed.
