A village teacher in Banyumas has produced unique teaching aids to stimulate interest in learning. Nationally recognized, the method proves effective in improving students' scholastic performance.

The class begins in one hour's time. Already, the sixth graders at the Elementary School No. 2 in the village of Kecila in Banyumas, Central Java, have arrived for the day's classes. Schoolbags are a luxury to the children of the poor families in the village. Most carry their books in their hands. Others, those who can afford it, carry them in plastic bags.
