Lacking much needed quality polytechnic graduates, Batam has now – with assistance from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) – embarked on the establishment of its own version of a polytechnic.

Of the various modern facilities available on Batam, those for education are the weakest link in the chain. Designed as an industrial estate, the island should have had a polytechnic 10 years ago. Yet industries on Batam appear to have grown without adequate educational support. Just like a plant that has to grow without fertilizer.
