Residents in a Central Java village have taken the initiative to protect a rare bird species threatened with extinction by uncontrolled hunting.

THE white board carries a message: Thank you for not hunting birds in this area. The subtle warning is unusual because coconut groves where the board is located is not a national park nor a wildlife preserve area.
