THE peatland is no longer covered with trees. The area of 3 square kilometers at Teluk Pepadi, Semenanjung Kampar, Riau, has become an open stretch of land crisscrossed by canals in which reddish water flows. The meranti and ramin trees that used to grow tall there have become neat stacks of wood lining the newly opened, muddy road.
