Tuesday, August 7, 2012

Two whale sharks met their end on an Indonesian beach within a span of a single week, as search and rescue (SAR) team members at Pelangi beach told Tempo of their struggle to prevent a nine-meter whale shark from being battered by waves, beginning Friday till Saturday morning. An official with Indonesia's SAR agency, Ali Sutanto, said that a 53-year-old Bantul resident, Sukarsih, was among the first locals to spot the gargantuan whale, marked by round, white spots across its body, at the Pelangi beach. Fishermen spotted the whale struggling after Friday's evening prayers.
