Bandung's Chronic Flooding

The month-long heavy rains are playing havoc on Bandung's infrastructure. Structural issues, a high population density and a lack of flood management coordination complicates the search for a solution.

THE canopy above the waiting area at Bandung's railroad station collapsed after heavy rains and strong winds blew over the city, two weeks ago. Sheets of tin roof flew off. Rainwater raced rapidly through the station. In less than 15 minutes, the water level had reached half a meter. Passengers waiting on the platform scrambled to find higher ground. Train operations were suspended, as 10 of the station's tracks were submerged in water.
