Environmental damage is rising at an increasingly alarming rate in Indonesia. Each year, an estimated 1.8 million hectares of forests is destroyed. Illegal logging is even spreading into national parks. More and more mercury-laden waste is being discharged into rivers by irresponsible mining firms. The World Bank estimates that last year, air pollution alone caused US$600 million in losses to Indonesia.
